Tips for Onboarding New Remote Employees
Onboarding new remote employees is challenging and more important than ever.
Here are some tips:
- Get the right technology in their hands on day one. Make sure they can access all the tools, programs, and platforms they will need.
- Check in with them when they start. Do they have what they need? Are they comfortable with the tools provided? Do they have any concerns?
- Set expectations. Be realistic and clear. Take time to get to know how they best work.
- Encourage questions. Tell them that texts, IMs, emails, and calls are OK.
- Space out learning. Check to see they aren’t overwhelmed and they understand the learning. Constant contact while learning, especially at first, can be helpful.
- Make them feel really welcome. Invite all team members to reach out. Set up 15-minute online breakfast/lunch team meetings to talk about things not related to work. Make time to connect on a personal level.
- Check in, not checkup. Over-communicate at first but let them know it’s to check in, not check up on their work. You can adjust this frequency as they get settled in.
