Starting is the Hardest Part
Starting something new can be difficult. Starting an exercise regimen, getting a degree, starting a company – these all seem insurmountable at the beginning.
Starting something new can also be frightening. Fear of failure or unwillingness to change can stall us in our tracks.
What can you do to start strong?
- Set a goal – In Stephen Covey’s words, “Begin with the end in mind.” State it out loud… “I will get off my medications.” “I will be my own boss.” “I will learn all I can.”
- Set a deadline to START (not finish). – Life can get in the way and impact timelines. Make adjustments and shift your end date. But you have to START, now.
- Invest in your idea. – There’s nothing like money to make an idea seem more important and more urgent. Get some skin in the game.
- Be visible. – Let others know what you are doing and why. Update them often with both successes and failures. You may find some great partners and ideas along the way.
- Find your sweet spot. – There’s no need to do something you don’t love or don’t excel at.
Starting my own communications consultancy is scary and exciting. Thanks to my many supporters who have given me the confidence to START.
